A firepit for your outdoor space

gathering around a fire pit

With the move to working from home in 2020 and the allot of people still working from home in 2021, we have seen a spike in the number of people wanting to improve their outdoor spaces. And with this shift in work-life balance, firepits have become super popular for outdoor living; what a great way to gather around. The smell of wood burning in a pit is usually a positive association; we think of summer camp-outs, bonfires at the beach, and good times spent with loved ones during colder months.

Whether you would prefer an open or enclosed firepit, architectural, built-in or rustic… there’s a firepit to suit your surroundings and design aesthetic.

Stone Firepits

Like moths to the flame, a stone firepit will draw people to it. A beautiful, traditional addition to your outdoor space that will last for many, many years to come. It creates a stunning gathering place whilst keeping the fire enclosed and compliment the surrounding terrain. A permanent fixture, a firepit like this one above will bring everyone together in the evening to relax, enjoy food and drinks, get warm, and enjoy one another’s company.

Rustic and DIY Firepits

DIY firepit

You can absolutely build your own firepit and it shouldn’t take allot of time or money. Consider the materials your gonig to use to build your firepit (consider the flamability of those materials). Where are you going to set up your pit? Preferrably, you want the firepit out in the open (with no roof enclosing it) as this could be a disaster waiting to happen. If you have a stoned or pebbled area with no roof above it and several metres of clear space all the way around, this might be where you position your firepit. It would also allow for seating around the pit.

Select a site that is a reasonable distance from your house or other buildings, away from fuel storage, supply lines, and clear of low-hanging tree or shrub branches. You should also consider the likelihood your going to use the firepit for entertaining based on where you position it.

Architectural Firepit

If the firepit is being installed on a deck or in and around any other flammable surface, consult a professional.

As soon as you light the fire and gather around, the kids start collecting sticks to roast marshmallows. It’s a fantastic way to teach them about fire safety and what we do when we are around a fire and how we have to act.

Enclosed Firepits

Enclosed firepit

Enclosed firepits are a safer alternative for the super conscious burner. You get all of the benefits of a more traditional open firepit but with additional safety built in.

Open Firepits

Traditional chimenea open fireplace

A well-designed chimenea will draw air into the fire and direct smoke upward away from people sitting on your patio. Clean up is minimal as well, since the fire burns hot and leaves only a small amount of ash. Additionally, chimeneas enclose the fire, making them a safer choice. They are also a great alternative for a smaller space as they don’t take up allot of room.
